Training and support for special schools or SEND/ASN units in mainstream schools
For teachers working with pupils learning to read in SEND schools or in additionally resourced provisions.
Read Write Inc. Phonics provides pupils of all ages with the skills and knowledge they need to read and spell.
Pupils are taught in small Read Write Inc. Phonics groups or individually with Fast Track Tutoring; breaking down the programme into small, incremental steps to help pupils who need extra support.
Lessons are well-paced, engaging and motivating. Pupils learn new sounds each week and importantly, review previous sounds and words until they read them confidently in closely matched decodable texts.
Assessment matches the steps, so progress is recognised and celebrated.
Appropriate resources for all pupils
We work with teachers to adapt Read Write Inc. resources for pupils who:
• are non-verbal
• use alternative communications systems
• have limited hearing or use sign language
• have limited vision
• have fine motor difficulties.
Please note:
We recognise that there are a few pupils with exceptionally profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD) who might not be able to access direct literacy instruction.

Pupils learn the routines and behaviours necessary for each activity, and practise these until they use them automatically. This allows them to focus on learning to read and write.
Pupil referral units (PRU) and social, emotional and mental health difficulties (SEMH) specialist provision
Many pupils who attend a PRU or SEMH specialist provision, may have missed out on learning to read.
If most pupils are nine years old and under, we recommend the Phonics training and support package. It’s also suitable for older pupils with significant learning difficulties.
The Fresh Start online training is included in this package to support older pupils.
If most pupils are over nine and do not have significant learning difficulties, we recommend Fresh Start training for secondary schools.
Trainers provide advice on how to organise teaching to meet the needs of all pupils.
